When we throw something ‘away’ our minds do not think about where that away is. More often than not our away is either to landfill, or to another country, where they are paid to deal with our rubbish. These countries are no better equipped to deal with it than us, resulting in plastic materials being dumped, burned or buried- each with their own huge environmental consequences.
We recognize there are only so many metal straws and beeswax wraps one can use to create change. Rather than just telling companies they need to change, we want to collaborate. We will be providing real-world, researched and proven solutions to remove, reduce, and replace plastics by sustainable alternatives, in that order. If we can educate both producers and consumers to rely less on plastic in the first place, the flow on effects for a sustainable future will be invaluable.
While our research team works hard to induce change within people and companies, our content team will be documenting this process to create an 80 minute documentary covering the highs and lows along the way. Combined with footage of the real world impacts of plastic pollution on our oceans and all that is connected to them, we will follow plastic from its supply chain roots, through to its short stay in the hands of consumers, to its eventual shoreline (or sea floor) home.
As one group of 25 youth, we are capable of huge things. However, hand in hand with many groups, united in our grasp of the power of film, social media, story telling, knowledge sharing and action inspiring, we may just be capable of saving the world. To do this, our plans go beyond research, documentation and industrial collaboration. After our film is released, we will mentor other grassroot groups to help them achieve their own goals and foster the growth and development of a truly sustainable future.
